The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) use a test called the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) to decide if you can claim these benefits. The Work Capability Assessment is used to decide whether or not you are fit for work for ESA and Universal Credit.
The report identifies six essential capabilities that young people need to be considered employable and it proposes a common language for young people and employers alike to use. These are defined as self-aware , receptive , driven , self-assured , resilient , and informed. The work capability assessment is the medical assessment used to decide whether you are eligible for employment and support allowance (ESA ). It consists of two separate tests.
The first test is to decide whether you are eligible for main phase ESA with a work-related activity component. This is called the limited capability for work assessment. For example, if an employee becomes unable to do their job due to an illness and adjustments or support cannot help.
Work Capability Assessment This is the process by which the DWP assess whether you have limited capability to work or limited capability for work -related activity, and are therefore entitled to Employment Support Allowance or the limited capability for work element of Universal Credit.
If you have limited capability for work due to a health condition or disability , your Universal Credit award may include an additional amount and you will have different requirements or conditionality compared to those without a health condition or disability. There are two different groups determined by your capability for work, the Limited Capability for Work (LCW) group and the Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) group. The capability for work questionnaire (ESA50) is currently unavailable.

To be referred for work capability assessment you must either not be working , or be earning under hours the national minimum wage per week. If you report a long-term health condition or disability which is likely to last more than days you may be referred to have a Work Capability Assessment (WCA).
This applies whether you are employed or unemployed. You will need to complete a written questionnaire (ESA50) to give details of your health condition and how it affects your everyday life.
