Those who espouse free will believe that human beings are free to choose. The argument of free will and determinism between psychologists and philosophers has existed for years. People who are determined assume that behaviour is determined by outside and internal forces performing on the human being. One example of an outside force could be parents supporting a kind of behaviour thereby encouraging it.
That very fact of causation can be taken as evidence against free will. More dramatically, work by Sigmund Freud claimed to show that people’s behavior is often guided and shaped by unconscious processes and forces, so that what they consciously think they are doing might be mistaken. Freud claimed that the human psyche consisted of three separate areas - the i ego and superego - which compete against one another for control over our behavior.
The word free complicates matters and creates much of the confusion. Appropriately use the word free refers to freedom from coercion — a political usage of the term. Inappropriately use as in the free will debate, it implies that causality is coercion. And not just sometimes, but always.
