How can i prove inever been married

I had to do this when I was moving to Cyprus, I had to prove I had not already been married. I had to get a sworn statement, which involved going to my local court (here in Englan not over there) and reading out a statement they had prepared and someone signed it. How do you prove you have never been married ? It should be their burden to try and prove that you have been married. I guess you could have your closest.
